Nikolaus Bernau works as a freelance editor for the Berliner Zeitung in the areas of architecture, exhibition criticism, urban planning, design and monument preservation. He is also a freelance writer for various newspapers, journals and media outlets. His scholarly publications focus on the history of architecture and urban planning and on museum history. He has been a member of the Landesdenkmalrat Berlin since 2003. Furthermore he is Vice Chairman of the Richard-Schöne-Gesellschaft für Museumsgeschichte e.V.

Bernau studied art history and aesthetics, classical archaeology and ethnology at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Technische Universität Berlin and architecture at the TU Berlin and the former Hochschule der Künste Berlin. He is currently writing his dissertation on the architectural and museum history of the Pergamon Museum.
