Prof. Dr. Matthias Wemhoff
Matthias Wemhoff is director of the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte in Berlin and also head of the cultural heritage preservation in Berlin.
He studied Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology as well as History of Christianity and Medieval History in Bamberg and Freiburg. In 1992 he obtained his PhD with a thesis on “Das Damenstift Herford. Die archäologischen Ergebnisse zur Geschichte der Profan- und Sakralbauten seit dem späten 8. Jahrhundert” at the University of Freiburg. From 1992 to 2003 Matthias Wemhoff was director of the Kaiserpfalzmuseum in Paderborn and from 2003 to 2008 director of the Westfälisches Landesmuseum für Klosterkultur at the Monastry Dalheim. Furthermore, he was curator of several historical exhibitions, such as “Kunst und Kultur der Karolingerzeit” and “Canossa-Erschütterung der Welt”. Since 2010 he has also held a honorary professorship at the Freie Universität Berlin. Besides that he is board member of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Archäologie des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit and co-editor of the Archäologisches Nachrichtenblatt and is engaged in excavational field works.
