Franz Schopper is Director of the Brandenburgisches Landesamt für Denkmalpflege und Archäologisches Landesmuseum (Brandenburg Department of Conservation and the Archaeologic State Museum). He studied pre- and early history and history in Regensburg and Dublin. After graduating he worked for the Abteilung Bodendenkmalpflege of the Regierungsbezirk Oberpfalz (ground monument section of the administrative district Oberpfalz). Following this he became head of excavational field works in the Bayerisches Landesdenkmalamt (Bavarian Conservation Department) and researcher in the Gäubodenmuseum Straubing. Since 1997 he works for the Brandenburger Landesdenkmalamt (Brandenburg Conservation Department). Besides that he has held teaching positions at diverse universities since 1999, such as the Europa-Universität Viadrina in Frankfurt/ Oder, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Freie Universität zu Berlin where he was appointed Honorary Professor of Prehistoric Archaeology in 2014. His research focuses on Bronze and Iron Age research in the Oder area, slavic archaeology and medieval settlements.
