Hinrich Biesterfeldt is professor of Arabic and Islamic studies at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. He studied Semitic languages, Persian and Turkish, philosophy, and ancient and medieval history at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau, Munich, and Göttingen. He graduated in 1970 with a dissertation on an edition and analysis of the Arabic translation of an essay by the Greek physician Galen on the relation between body and soul, which was published in 1973 as “Galens Traktat ‘Dass die Kräfte der Seele den Mischungen des Körpers folgen'”. As a fellow of the Excellence Cluster Topoi, he conducts research on the topic of “Neue Erkentnisse zur arabischen Überlieferung und Rezeption von Galens psychologischen Schriften”.
