Dr. Emilie Villey

After an education in Classical Philology at the Université de Caen, France, Emilie Villey dedicated herself to History of Science and learning Syriac and Arabic. In June 2012 she presented a PhD thesis on Syriac Astronomical Texts written during the 6th and the 7th centuries CE. In her thesis, she edited and translated previously unpublished texts relevant for historians of science and she included an analysis of the evolution of scientific vocabulary.

Since January 1st, 2013 she has been recruited as a postdoctoral fellow by the Excellence Cluster Topoi, where she will work in research group (D-1) Space of Nature in collaboration with Professor Dr. G. Graßhoff, Dr. M. Ossendrijver and Dr. E. Rinner, who are specialists of ancient astronomy and geography. She will continue the work of editing and translating Syriac astronomical texts and in addition investigate how the sky and the earth are represented in astronomical texts written during the late antiquity.
