Guisto Traina is Professor for Ancient History at the Université Paris-Sorbonne and Senior Member (2014-2019) of the Insitut universitaire de France. His work comprises investigations on political, social and military history of Rome, especially concerning Roman relations with Iran and the Caucasus. In addition to this he works on a comprehensive history of the ancient kingdom of Greater Armenia. During his first stay at Topoi, he carried out his research as a visiting professor by working on a paper on “Mapping the World under Theodosius II”. Following this he joined the Berliner Antike Kolleg as a senior fellow by investigating Strabo`s works on geography whose results were recently published in the Routledge Companion to Strabo. In 2016 and 2017 Giusto Traina continues his collaboration with the research group (C-5) Common Sense Geography by improving the ancient concepts of “landmarks” and “frames of reference” which are central elements of the ancient space perception, – orientation and – description developed in Strabo`s “Geography”.
