Pierre Schneider is Associate Professor of Ancient History at the Université d`Artois and researcher at the Maison de l`Orient et de la Méditerranée. His research focuses on the linkages of the ancient Mediterranean world with the ancient world. In 2013 he received his habilitation from the Université Lyon with a thesis entitled “Grèce, Rome, océan Indien: la Méditerranée antique et les mondes de la mer Erythrée”. In his past and recent research projects he dealt with the conception of a database that collects Greek and Roman written sources on the Indian Ocean, with the transformations of ancient economies and with comparative studies of the ancient Mediterranean and ancient societies. During his research stay at Topoi he will work with the research project (C-5-3) Insularity on the ancient notions of “landmarks” and “space orientation” in the geography of Strabon.
