Winfried Schmitz is a historian and professor at the University of Bonn at the Department of History. He received his doctoral degree in Ancient History in 1985 with the thesis “Wirtschaftliche Prosperität, soziale Integration und die Seebundpolitik Athens in der ersten Hälfte des 4. Jahrhunderts v. Chr.“ at the University of Freiburg and his habilitation in 1995 with the thesis “Nachbarschaft und Dorfgemeinschaft im archaischen und klassischen Griechenland“, also at the University of Freiburg. His research topics are social, family, and law history in the 8th till 4th century BC; early christian epigraphy; greek history in the archaic period; classical period Athen and the history of Sparta in the archaic and classical period. Since 2010 he has leaded the project “Forschungen zur antiken Sklaverei“ at the academy of science and literature in Mainz, which was finished in 2016 resulting in the “Handwörterbuch zur antiken Sklaverei“ with about 1000 keywords.
