Renate Schlesier is Professor of the Study of Religion. She studied philosophy, classical philology and comparative literature at Eberhard Karls-Universität Tübingen as well as at Freie Universität Berlin. From 1993 to 2002 she was Professor of the Study of Culture and Anthropology at the University of Paderborn before being appointed Professor for the Study of Religion at the Freie Universität Berlin in 2002. Since then, she directed a series of research projects (with several subprojects) in the realm of collaborative research centers, such as the SFB 447 “Kulturen des Performativen”, SFB 626 “Ästhetische Erfahrung”, and SFB 644 “Transformationen der Antike”. In addition, she was principal investigator in the Excellence Cluster „Language of Emotion“. Since 2010, she has been a principal investigator within the Excellence Cluster Topoi where she directs the research project (C-2-4) on the Symposion as Space of Knowledge and Experience.
Her research focuses on ancient Greek religion in the context of cultural and intellectual history, including the history of transformation and interpretation of ancient concepts and figures down to the present.
