Bernd Roling studied Latin and Hebraic Philology, Philosophy, History and Indology at Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. After his graduation in 1998 he started a fellowship at the graduate school “Schriftkultur und Gesellschaft im Mittelalter”. In 2002 he completed his doctorate with a thesis entitled “Aristotelische Naturphilosophie und christliche Kabbalah im Werk Paulus Ritius”. Following this, he habilitated in Medieval and New-Age Latin Philology in 2007 in Münster  with a thesis on “Locutio angelica. Die Diskussion der Engelsprache als Antizipation einer Sprechakttheorie in Mittelalter und früher Neuzeit”. After several years of researching at Universität zu Köln, and substitute professorships in Göttingen and Münster, Bernd Roling gained a full professorship for Latin Philology at Freie Universität Berlin in 2010 with a research focus on Medieval Latin Philology. Besides that he gives lectures at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. At Topoi he is the speaker of the research group (D-4) “Immaterial Causes and Physical Space”.
