Irene Mittelberg is Professor of Linguistics and Cognitive Semiotics in the Human Technology Center at RWTH Aachen. She studied Romance linguistics, economics, French linguistics and literature, art history and linguistics in Freiburg, Paris, Hamburg and New York. In 2006 she received a doctorate in linguistics and cognitive studies from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, with a thesis entitled “Metaphor and Metonymy in Language and Gesture: Discourse Evidence for Multimodal Models of Grammar”. After lecturing and researching in Doha, Frankfurt and Amsterdam she began an assistant professorship at RWTH Aachen in 2009. At Topoi she carried out her research within the research group (C-1) Deixis and frames of reference by combining classical semiotic theories with recent cognitive-functional language theories in the construction of theory and in the analysis of diverse sign systems.
