Ivan I. MarĊenko is founder and director of the archaeological research centre at State University Kuban (Krasnodar/ Russia). Since 2015 he has been involved in the examinations of the Topoi research project (B-2-4) Scythian Tombs in the North-west Caucasus. Main focus of this collaboration lies in geo-physical examinations, analyses of the Scythian Great Kurgans and its periphery.
His research interests comprise ground monument conservation, archaeology of the horse-mounted nomads, reconstruction of contacts between the Scythian and Meotian culture during the Iron Age as well as investigations of the Kuban region in the earlier Iron Age (Sarmatian culture) and long-distance relationships between the western North-Caucasus and the Roman empire in the Black Sea region during the early Iron Age.
