Joachim Küpper studied Romance philology and history at the universities of Bochum, Paris and Toulouse. He did a doctorate and habilitated in Romance philology at the Universität Bochum and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. In winter semester 1999/2000 he was appointed Professor of Romane Philology and Literature at Freie Universität Berlin. He is dean of the Fachbereich Philosophie und Geisteswissenschaften. His explorations focus on the Middle Ages, the Early Modern Period as well as the 19th century. A central question of his work is the principles of cultural and literary dynamics. Besides this he investigates questions of general theories of literature and problems of art comparison.
