Kurt Guckelsberger studied physics and astrophysics in Munich and obtained his PhD in Grenoble, France. After stays at CERN and the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, Stuttgart, he entered PTB, the national metrology institute of Germany. From 1996 on, he was involved in a number of international metrological projects. After retiring in 2006, he joined a Masters program in history at Universität Braunschweig and is presently associate member of research group (C-5) Common Sense Geography at Freie Universität, Berlin, Friedrich Meinecke Institute, Historical Geography of the Ancient Mediterranean. He has published a large number of scientific papers, mainly on quantum phenomena in condensed matter. His present research interest is cartography before ~1520 CE.
