Bernhard Fritsch is working on his dissertation on the use of Spolia in the construction of the new St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and the simultaneous deconstruction of ancient spaces in the city. The main focus of his work is on the condition of the ancient monuments which were used as a “quarry” for St. Peter’s, which is partly documented in the Archvio della Reverendissima Fabbrica di San Pietro.

His project includes the innovative use of “Computer Vision”- Tools for creating 3D-models to compare and analyze the old and new locations of the spolia and the attempt to introduce this procedure also at excavations (https://server.topoi.hu-berlin.de/groups/bundlertools/).
