Brian Brown is archaeologist for Near Eastern Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. As a junior fellow in TOPOI the research focus of his project was on the Middle Assyrian to Late Assyrian transition (ca. 1300-850 BCE), with an emphasis on state structure and its changes during this period. During the last years he was well engaged in archaeological fieldwork in Tell Feheriye (Syria). Further aspects of his archaeological und cultural research are on ideology and propaganda, social hierarchy and the origins and development of human inequality, urbanism, imperialism, visual culture and architecture, water management in ancient societies and archaeological theory and method.
