Orhan Bingöl is an classical archaeologist from Ankara. In 1982 he habilitated on the ancient Temple of Smintheion. His academic career led him to Bochum and Würzburg with two fellowships by the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stiftung. In 1992 he was appointed director of the Vocatinal School for Conservation and Restoration of the University of Ankara and Professor for Classical Archaeology at Ankara Üniversitesi where he lectured until 2013. He is now head of the Department of Archaeology at Karabük Üniversitesi. Besides this he has been director of excavations in Magnesia at Mäander since 1984. During his fellowship at the Berliner Antike Kolleg he investigated the excavation history of Magnesia by researching unpublished correspndences of past excavationists as well as diaries, manuscripts, pictures, plans and drawings from the German expeditions during 1891 to 1893. This compilation and reconstruction of the past research on ancient Magnesia was also embedded into the research questions of Topoi`s research group (C-3) Fragments, Ruins and Space.
