Tønnes Bekker-Nielsen is an ancient historian. After his studies of history and art history he became managing director of Aarhus University Press and associate professor of ancient history at the University of Bergen. In 2000 he was appointed Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark, teaching successively in Esbjerg, Kolding and since 2013 in Odense. He is principal investigator of the research project “Where East Meets West: Urbanisation, Provincialisation and Cultural Interaction in Roman Anatolia”. His explorations focus on the history and geography of the Roman Empire, particularly communication and urbanisation as well as its economic history.
