Prof. Dr. Franz Alto Bauer

Franz Alto Bauer is Professor for Late Antique and Byzantine Art at Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universität München. He studied Late Antique and Byzantine art history, classical archaeology as well as ancient history and received a doctorate in 1993 with a work on the presentation of monuments in the Late Antique cities of Rome, Ephesos and Konstantinopel. After having worked as a consultant for Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages at the Istanbul Department of the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, he habilitated in 2001 at Universität Basel with a work on the image of Rome in the Liber Pontificalis. During his professional career he holded several guest professorships, such as at the universities of New York, Basel and Zurich. At Topoi he carried out his research by investigating the communication between the empereor and the population in the ancient city of Rome. His attention turned particularly to the visibile dialogue through monuments and images in the urban context of Late Antiquity. In 2013 he began a new research project which focuses the establishment of personal interests in the context of biographic experiences which consequently lead to research results as desired.
