Since 2011, the Graduate Exchange has brought together early-career researchers and renowned scholars working on a wide variety of topics in Late Antique, Byzantine and Early Medieval History. This year, Freie Universität Berlin will host researchers from Princeton, Oxford, Vienna, and Mainz. Papers will range geographically from England and France to Syria and Egypt, from the 5th to the 12th century. They will feature – among other topics – early medieval canon law manuscripts and late antique papyri, deal with diplomatic contacts between Byzantium and the Umayyads and between the papacy and Visigothic Spain, while others focus on Theodosian and Carolingian legal culture. This workshop will offer many opportunities for international as well as interdisciplinary exchange and cooperation.
