Three-dimensional Representation in Greek Coins and Its Effect on Associated Coinages

Angela Berthold’s research project examines Greek coins starting from the earliest issues of the Archaic period down to the end of the Classical period. Similar to most classes of Greek art the images on Greek coins developed over that time towards a more and more realistic or naturalistic way of representation. Due to the brief time it takes to issue coins and the fact that they were minted constantly, the significant stages during this development can be more thoroughly observed in coins than in objects of other genres. Therefore, it is possible to reconstruct the individual steps of this development that did not progress constantly. Likewise, it is of great benefit that we know where most of the coins were minted. Thanks to this knowledge even certain regional differences and contact zones of style can be discerned.
